Starting Reports 1. OXFORD BLUE (D. David) jumped awkwardly.
Stewards Reports 1. As the start was effected, WELL CONNECTED (S. Donohoe) which was restless in the stalls, threw its head down, brushed the outside gates which as a consequence opened marginally earlier than the other gates. Thereafter, this gelding jumped awkwardly and lost a length. In reviewing this incident, the Board was of the opinion that any prejudice suffered by this horse was a result of its own behavior and that from the patrol films of the race, it could not be established that any advantage was gained by WELL CONNECTED from its gate opening fractionally earlier. Therefore, no action was taken in respect of this incident. 2. Leaving the 1300m, OXFORD BLUE (D. David) was tightened for galloping room when awkwardly placed on inside of CHAPTER AND VERSE (J. Bardottier). Jockey J. Bardottier appeared before the Board, was shown the patrol films of the race and advised to take more care when shifting ground in races. Additionally, Jockey J. Bardottier was advised that should he appear before the Board regarding a similar incident in the near future, more severe sanctions may follow. 3. Jockey S. Donohoe (WELL CONNECTED) appeared before the Board, was shown the patrol films of the race and was questioned regarding his decision to maneuver WELL CONNECTED to the extreme outside in the straight. In this regard, Jockey S. Donohoe
explained that WELL CONNECTED had shown a tendency to hang out throughout the running, which in his opinion was compounded by SPIRITUAL WIND (B. Bhaugeerothee) rolling out on various occasions in the running and brushing WELL CONNECTED at the 400m. Accordingly, entering the straight he elected to allow WELL CONNECTED to drift out, get balanced and then run on at the finish. The Board noted the explanations of Jockey S. Donohoe. Additionally, Jockey S. Donohoe was issued with a caution in that his conduct in the Board Room was inappropriate. He was advised that should a similar incident occur in the future, a more severe sanction may follow.
