Goolgar) and BACKPACKER (D. Bheekary) raced wide from the 400m. 6. Leaving the 400m, SEATTLE KID (I. Taka) was carried out by CANARY ISLAND (B. Sooful) which switched out to continue its run. 7. ARNHEM LAND (S. Donohoe) and ZUM ZUM (R. Joorawon) were baulked for a clear run between the 400m and the 300m. 8. Approaching the 150m, ZUM ZUM (R. Joorawon) which was hanging in, in the straight, and PRINCE OF VENICE (M. De Oliveira) were tightened for galloping room when awkwardly placed on the outside of ARNHEM LAND (S. Donohoe), which was hanging out from the 250m, proving difficult to assist. As a consequence of this incident, BACKPACKER (D. Bheekary) was bumped out by CANARY ISLAND (B. Sooful), which was carried out by ZUM ZUM. In assessing this incident, the Board took into consideration the various corrective measures taken by Jockey S. Donohoe and determined that the interference caused was as a consequence of the behaviour of ARNHEM LAND. Therefore, this was deemed a racing incident. Additionally, Trainer R. Maingard will be advised that the racing manners of ARNHEM LAND were unacceptable and he will be advised to take all reasonable measures to ensure that there is not a similar occurrence in future. 9. Starting Reports 1. LAMBORGHREENI (R. Joorawon) jumped awkwardly, brushed the inside starting stall and unbalanced Jockey R. Joorawon. 2. HUYSSTEEN (S. Bhundoo) lost four lengths.
Stewards Reports 3. At the 1100m, CASTLE OF GLASS (S. Donohoe) elected to race from the position outside the leader, to the lead. Jockey S. Donohoe (CASTLE OF GLASS) appeared before the Board and was questioned regarding his tactics on CASTLE OF GLASS in this race. In this regard, Jockey S. Donohoe’s attention was drawn to the fact that his instructions were not to lead in this race, but to obtain a forward position in the running. Jockey S. Donohoe
explained that he had felt that CASTLE OF GLASS had shown a tendency to lean in, in the running and he did not want to fight his horse in the early stages after finding himself on the outside of the leader, racing without cover. Consequently, he elected to allow this gelding to stride forward and take the lead as it was his view that this would be where CASTLE OF GLASS would be most comfortable in the running. The Board noted the explanation of Jockey S. Donohoe. 4. At the 800m, DOUBLE GAMES (D. Bheekary) was carried out by CHRISTMAS BAY (I. Taka), which shifted out when overracing. 5. LAMBORGHREENI (R. Joorawon) raced greenly in the running and had to be ridden on numerous occasions in order to keep in touch with the field. However, notwithstanding the urging of Jockey R. Joorawon, this gelding commenced to give ground to the field from the 450m. In view of the performance of LAMBORGHREENI, the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. 6. Jockey S. Bhundoo (HUYSSTEEN) appeared before the Board, was shown the patrol films of the race and advised against the practice of using his whip more than seven times before the 150m. Jockey S. Bhundoo was issued with a warning. 7. Jockey M. De Oliveira appeared before the Board and was questioned regarding his riding of FREEDOM OF SPEECH. In this regard, his attention was specifically drawn to his lack of intent between the 400m and the 300m. Jockey M. De Oliveira explained that he had intended to take the inside running when making his run in the home straight, however, he did not want to risk being caught behind runners, and instead elected to switch one off the rail at the 400m and ease FREEDOM OF SPEECH into the race before allowing this gelding to use its strong finishing burst in the straight. He further explained that as he attempted to move alongside CHRISTMAS BAY (I. Taka) after the 400m, he was cautious as he did not want to get carried wide by CHRISTMAS BAY. Therefore, he waited a fraction longer before making his run around the turn and into the straight. He further stated that when making his run around the home turn, he was carried wide by CHRISTMAS BAY, which switched out from the inside running rail; and thereafter, despite his corrections, FREEDOM OF SPEECH was hanging in from the 250m, which resulted in him being prejudiced in that he could not use his whip as in the norm. Trainer S. Mahadia appeared before the Board and was afforded the opportunity to place on record any statements regarding the ride of Jockey M. De Oliveira with specific reference to the distance between the 450m and the 300m. Trainer S. Mahadia stated that he would have
preferred for FREEDOM OF SPEECH to have waited on the inside and make his run cutting back to the inside when entering the straight as it was his opinion that this horse runs best when held up for a run for as long as possible and then making his run in the straight. Trainer S. Mahadia further stated that whilst his first choice was not adopted in the running by Jockey M. De Oliveira, he had no complaint to lodge with the Stipendiary Stewards regarding his riding. The Board noted the explanations of both Trainer S. Mahadia and Jockey M. De Oliveira and has adjourned to review the footage of this race. 8. Jockey D. Bheekary signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 29.2.15, in that he used his whip down the shoulder of DOUBLE GAMES, whilst in the drawn position. Accordingly, a penalty of a fine of Rs 2,500 was imposed on him.
